I was looking for a way to lose my last post pregnancy pounds, but I did not want to give up chocolate cake.
I was fine with giving up sugar but I wasn’t sure what to make of all the sugar replacements. So being a journalist I decided to do my research.
Honey and dried fruit seemed healthy but were too sweet and high carb. Agave syrup seemed like a great low glycemic solution. But then I read the research on how the liver has a hard time processing too much fructose. Agave syrup is 90% fructose, and is actually ultimately fattening. I threw out my agave.
Well – according to new research, artificial sweeteners DO NOT help you lose weight! In fact they may even do the opposite!
In a study two groups of rats were fed yoghurt. In the first group the yoghurt was sweetened with sugar. In the second group it was sweetened with saccharin. Over two weeks the rats given saccharin yoghurt ate more than the other rats, which meant their appetite had been stimulated. They also gained more weight and their body fat increased.
Because when I researched the next sugar replacement I found only good. Actually – I found a truck load of good.

Yacon Syrup is relatively new on the market. It is derived from a tubular plant in South America, and tastes like molasses.
The sugar in yacon syrup is mainly in the form of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) which cannot be absorbed by the body, so the blood sugar levels aren’t affected. It has a much lower glycemic index than other sweeteners such as honey or agave syrup, and is low in calories.
Also – eating yacon syrup increases your defecation frequency and satiety sensation. Which means you eat less.
